Spring Court Opening Checklist for NJ

Winter doesn't announce the damage it did — it just leaves a court that looks fine from the gate. Here's what to actually check before the first match of the season.

Step 1: Let It Dry Before Anyone Plays

Snowmelt doesn't clear a court evenly. Do this in full daylight, on foot, covering every square foot — not a walk-through from the gate. Salt overspray from nearby walkways and driveways, sand from ice traction, and a winter's worth of grime can make a perfectly sound surface look dull and rough — and it can mask real cracks under a layer of buildup. One thing trips people up every year: you can inspect and diagnose the moment the court is dry, but you usually can't resurface it yet. Standard acrylic coatings need the surface and air temperature at roughly 50°F and rising at the time of application, holding above that for about 24 hours afterward, to cure and bond the way they're supposed to. In much of New Jersey that threshold doesn't hold reliably until mid-to-late April, sometimes later in a cold spring.
