A coating applied over an untested, moisture-compromised slab can delaminate within a season or two — at which point the entire job, labor and material, has to be redone on top of the original cost.

What Untested Moisture Actually Does to a Coating

Blistering

Trapped vapor pushes up under the cured acrylic, forming raised bubbles that eventually pop and peel — usually showing up months after the job looked finished.

In more severe cases, entire sheets of coating separate from the slab, sometimes exposing bare concrete or asphalt in high-traffic areas of the court.

Why This Matters More in New Jersey

New Jersey's freeze-thaw winters make moisture testing more relevant here than in drier climates. Water that gets into a slab through hairline cracks or a compromised prior coating expands when it freezes, which both damages the base and pushes more moisture toward the surface over time — a slab that tested fine five years ago isn't necessarily fine today, especially if it's shown any cracking since its last recoat. Testing also protects against a more basic risk: birdbaths and low spots that hold standing water after every rain are a moisture source sitting right on top of the slab, not just moving through it from below. The testing step applies to both of our standard resurfacing services. On pickleball court resurfacing jobs, it happens right after the clean-and-inspect step and before any resurfacer coat goes down. On tennis court resurfacing, which covers more surface area and often more coating cycles over the court's life, we\'ll sometimes test multiple zones separately if the court shows uneven wear, since a slab can pass in one section and fail in another.

Why does a court slab need moisture testing before resurfacing?+

Concrete and asphalt both hold and release moisture over time, and an acrylic coating applied over a slab that's still emitting moisture from below traps water vapor under the new coat. That trapped vapor is what causes blistering and peeling months or a year later — a resurfacing job can look perfect on day one and fail from underneath regardless of how good the acrylic application itself was.

What's the simplest moisture test, and is it good enough?+

Taping a sheet of plastic to the surface and checking for condensation underneath after 24 hours is a real, commonly used field test, and it catches obvious moisture problems. It's not as precise as an in-situ relative humidity probe or a calcium chloride test, so we treat it as a first screen rather than the final word on a slab that's borderline or that failed a previous resurfacing.

What is a calcium chloride moisture test?+

A sealed dome containing an anhydrous calcium chloride packet sits on the slab for 60–72 hours, and the moisture it absorbs is weighed and converted into a moisture emission rate — pounds of vapor per 1,000 square feet per 24 hours. Most standard acrylic primers can tolerate up to about 3 lbs per 1,000 sq ft per day; specialty moisture-tolerant primers can handle more, which is one option on a slab that tests high but is otherwise structurally sound.

What happens if a coating is applied without testing a wet slab?+

Best case, an early-season coating shows minor bubbling that gets patched. Worse case, the coating delaminates in sheets within a season or two, and the entire resurfacing job — labor and material — has to be stripped and redone, on top of the original cost. Skipping a test that costs a few hundred dollars to save time is the single most avoidable way to lose an entire resurfacing budget.

Does an older court need testing even if it's been resurfaced before?+

Yes, and arguably more than a newer slab — prior coating failures, cracks that have let water into the base over the years, or a history of standing water all raise the odds of an elevated moisture reading. We test every resurfacing project regardless of the court's age or history, since the alternative is guessing on a base you can't see into.
