It rarely fails catastrophically in one season; it creeps, which is exactly why it's tempting to skip on a tight budget and expensive to fix once it's noticeable.
Does the court slab itself need to go below the frost line too?+
No — that's a different problem with a different fix. A court slab resists freeze-thaw through its base design (a properly compacted stone sub-base with drainage slope, and post-tension or reinforced concrete or asphalt on top), not by burying the whole slab below frost depth, which isn't practical for a large flat surface. Posts and piers are isolated points that can and should be footed below frost depth; the slab is engineered to handle the same freeze-thaw cycle a different way.
