In-Ground
A pole set in a concrete footing below the frost line. The most stable option and the standard for a real court investment — fixed or height-adjustable, glass or acrylic backboard. Costs the most to install because of the footing, but doesn't move, lean, or need to be repositioned.
Portable
A wheeled base filled with sand or water anchors the pole; no digging, no footing, no permanence. Cheapest and fastest to place, but a portable base can shift or tip under a hard dunk or a gust of wind, and most bases are rated for a smaller backboard than an in-ground pole can carry.
Wall-Mounted
Bolted to a garage or building facade with an extension arm. No footing cost at all, but only works where a structurally sound wall sits at the right distance and height from the playing surface — not an option for a standalone court.

The Footing Is What Keeps It Plumb
A hoop pole is a single, isolated load point — there's no slab-wide engineering trick to fall back on the way there is for a court surface. Depth and diameter are the whole answer.

Footing & Installation Process
An in-ground hoop footing is dug or augered to depth, then either poured directly against the surrounding soil or into a cardboard sonotube form set to the manufacturer's diameter — commonly 18 to 24 inches. A sonotube is worth the extra step in sandy or loose New Jersey soil, where a direct-bury pour can lose shape or pull loose material into the mix as it cures. The pole's ground sleeve or anchor bolts go in while the concrete is still workable, plumbed and braced so the pole doesn't settle out of true before the pour sets.
The 42–48 inch depth most manufacturers specify isn't arbitrary — it's deep enough to resist the leverage a full-height pole and backboard put on the footing under wind load and repeated rim impact, independent of frost. Concrete needs real cure time before the pole takes load — most installers wait several days at minimum before mounting a backboard, and full design strength isn't reached for roughly a month, the same general cure window as a court slab itself. Hanging a heavy glass backboard on a footing that hasn't cured is a common cause of a pole that leans within its first season, not a frost problem at all.
Backboard & Rim Options
Tempered glass
The truest rebound and the standard for competitive play. Heavier than acrylic, which means a heavier-gauge pole and a footing sized to carry the extra weight and wind load safely — not a swap you make on an undersized existing pole.
Acrylic / polycarbonate
Lighter, less expensive, and holds up fine to New Jersey's temperature swings. Rebound feels noticeably softer than glass, which matters more to a serious player than a casual family court.
Breakaway rim
A spring-loaded hinge flexes under weight and snaps back, protecting the backboard mount from a hang or a hard rim grab. Standard on most mid-range and higher systems; worth having on any court that sees real play.
Height adjustment
Crank-adjustable systems move the whole backboard assembly from a youth height up to the regulation 10 ft; telescoping poles do the same with a pull-pin mechanism. Fixed-height systems cost less but only make sense once the household is done growing into the game.

Including a hoop footing in the original construction is always the cheaper path. The excavation equipment, concrete truck, and crew are already mobilized for the base pour, so adding a footing at the same time is a marginal cost, not a separate visit. Adding an in-ground hoop after the court surface is already finished costs more, because the surface has to be cut or cored to reach the footing location, then patched and re-coated to blend with the surrounding acrylic once the concrete cures. If you're not ready to commit to a hoop on day one but expect to want one later, tell your contractor before the base pour — roughing in the footing location, or even pouring an empty sleeve, avoids the cut-and-patch cost entirely. Adding an in-ground hoop after the court surface is finished means cutting or coring through the finished acrylic or slab edge to pour a new footing, then patching and re-coating around it — extra steps a footing poured alongside the original base skips entirely. If you know a hoop is coming even if the budget doesn't allow it on day one, it's worth asking your contractor to rough in the footing location during the original pour.
What is a breakaway rim and do I need one?+
A breakaway rim uses a spring-loaded hinge that lets the rim flex downward under a player's weight (from hanging on a dunk) and then snap back into position, instead of bending permanently or cracking the backboard mount. It's standard on most mid-range and higher in-ground systems today and is worth having on any court that sees serious play, though it adds modestly to the cost over a fixed, non-breakaway rim.
