The second driver is New Jersey's freeze-thaw cycle specifically. Water that gets under an edge of the slab, through a joint, or into soil beside it freezes and expands each winter, then thaws and lets that space collapse again each spring. Do that for a few winters over a spot where drainage was never quite right and you get heave — a section that pushes up rather than sinks down — often right next to a low spot where water pooled the winter before. Settlement Looks Different From a Surface Crack

A hairline crack that doesn't move under your weight is usually a coating issue. A panel that rocks, clicks, or has visibly tilted is a base issue — and resurfacing over it won't hold.

Mudjacking vs. Polyurethane Foam: How Each Repair Actually Works

Mudjacking

A cement-and-soil slurry is pumped through drilled holes to fill the void and lift the slab. It runs roughly $3–$6 per square foot nationally and is the lower-cost option up front. The tradeoff is weight: at 100–150 lbs per cubic foot, the slurry itself can compress soft or poorly compacted soil further over time, which is why mudjacked slabs more often need a second lift within 5–10 years.

Polyurethane foam injection

A two-part structural foam is injected through smaller holes, expanding and curing in 15–30 minutes. At roughly 2–4 lbs per cubic foot it adds almost no load to the soil it sits on, and typically holds 10–15 years. It costs more — roughly $5–$25 per square foot — but is the option we lean toward on a sport surface, where a true, flat plane matters for ball bounce and player safety in a way it doesn't on a driveway slab.

Either method requires the concrete itself to still be structurally sound. Neither one fixes a slab that's cracked through, and neither one fixes the drainage or root problem that caused the void — those get addressed separately, or the same spot settles again.

When to Lift, When to Rebuild

Slab lifting is the right call when the concrete or asphalt is structurally intact and the problem is a void or soft spot underneath it — a court that settled because the base was never compacted right, or one edge that heaved from a drainage issue that's since been corrected. It is a repair, and it should be priced and treated like one.

It stops being the right call under three conditions we see repeatedly: the slab is cracked through in more than one place rather than just displaced, the same section has already been lifted once and has settled again, or the underlying drainage or grading defect that caused the void in the first place is still present. Lifting a slab back onto a base that still floods every spring buys a season or two, not a fix.
