Standard Hardware Doesn't Last at the Shore

Airborne salt spray accelerates corrosion on exposed metal well beyond what the same fastener sees a few miles inland. Fence hardware, net post sleeves, and light fixture housings all need a coastal-grade spec, not a standard-galvanized one, within roughly a few hundred feet of the ocean.

What Actually Corrodes First

Standard galvanized chain-link hardware, ties, and fasteners can show real corrosion within 3–5 years under sustained salt exposure. Upgrading to stainless fasteners and ties at the fence is one of the more cost-effective coastal upgrades relative to what a premature hardware replacement costs later.

Lighting and net hardware

Light fixture housings and net post sleeves are easy to overlook because they're not the first thing anyone inspects. Wind is the other shore-specific load. A shore-area court sees more sustained wind than an inland site with tree cover or surrounding structures to break it up, which increases the load on fencing and any wind screens. Sizing posts and footings for that load — not the standard inland spec — is a detail worth confirming with your contractor up front.

Water Table and Drainage on Barrier-Island Lots

Barrier-island and bayfront properties frequently sit on a higher water table than inland New Jersey lots, independent of the salt-air corrosion question entirely.
