A Surface Choice Can't Fix a Load Problem

Most roofs carry 20–30 lbs/sq ft. An occupied recreational deck needs roughly 55 lbs/sq ft or more once dead, live, and environmental loads stack up — reference standards like IBC Sections 1603–1604 govern how that gets calculated and documented.

Waterproofing: The Court Is Part of the Roof Now

Once a court sits on a roof or elevated deck, it isn't a surface laid on top of the building anymore — it's part of the roof assembly, and it has to be detailed that way. A properly built rooftop court uses a continuous waterproof membrane underneath the surfacing system, with the surface structure floating on that membrane instead of fastening through it. Sleepers or pedestals that rest on the membrane, rather than penetrating it with fasteners, are what keep the roof's water barrier intact under a surface that gets walked, run, and rained on for years.

Drainage has to be solved twice: the court surface itself needs to shed water the way any outdoor court does, and the roof underneath needs its own drainage plan so water doesn't pond beneath the surfacing system where nobody can see it happening. A court that drains beautifully on top of a roof with an inadequate drain layout just relocates the ponding problem to a place that's harder and more expensive to find and fix. This is also where a roofing contractor who knows the existing membrane and its warranty terms needs to be part of the project from the start — a surface installer working without that coordination can void a roof warranty without realizing it.

Lighter than a poured acrylic-over-concrete system, no wet pour needed on an elevated structure, and individual tiles can be lifted for roof access or repairs without demolishing anything. Possible where the structure is engineered to carry it, but it adds real dead load compared to modular tile. This is exactly the kind of decision the structural engineer's load analysis settles before cost enters the conversation.
