When Demolition Is Actually Necessary
Base Failure
Cracking that runs through to the sub-base, widespread heaving, or settling severe enough that resurfacing would just recoat a structural problem.
Footprint Change
Expanding a court, changing its orientation, or converting a single-sport slab into a larger combo layout that the existing base can't support at the new size.
Tree Root Damage
Roots from mature trees near the court that have lifted or cracked the slab from below — resurfacing over active root movement is a short-term fix at best.

Can the old slab be reused instead of removed?+
Sometimes — if a sound section of the existing slab can serve as sub-base or fill elsewhere on site, it avoids hauling and disposal costs for that portion.
